Wineries near Hobart

Wineries near Hobart

Some of Australia's most celebrated cool-climate wine is grown within an easy drive of Hobart. Here's how the cellar doors of Southern Tasmania fit together, region by region.

Hobart sits at the centre of Southern Tasmania's wine country. Four wine regions fan out from the city: the Coal River Valley to the north-east around Richmond, the Derwent Valley along the river to the north-west, the Huon Valley and D'Entrecasteaux Channel to the south, and the South East towards the Tasman Peninsula.

The south is known for elegant Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling, and for traditional-method sparkling wine. Many producers are small and family-run, and some only open their gates during Wine South Tasmania's two festivals, so it pays to check before you go.

Before you go

Plan a day among the vines

  • Pick one region a day. Each region has enough cellar doors for a full day, and staying in one valley means less time on the road.
  • Check opening hours. Year-round cellar doors keep regular hours; festival-only vineyards open for Spring in the Vines or the Southern Open Vineyards Weekend.
  • Book a designated driver or a tour. Wine South Tasmania advocates responsible drinking. Our partners include hop-on hop-off services and wine tours.
  • Download a map. Printable region maps show every participating producer.
